Meet your Area Expert: Bluesky Expeditions

    Bluesky Expeditions

Bluesky Expeditions is owned and operated by Gerald Azure. Gerald is Metis, a well-respected licensed outfitter, and Canadian Ranger who has spent his life in Manitoba. The youngest of 10 children, he grew up on the trapline hunting and fishing alongside his family and their sled dogs in Cormorant Manitoba. Gerald studied Social Work at the University of Manitoba, and after working with this field for a short time he discovered his true passion, staying connected with the land while sharing his history, heritage and culture alongside his sled dogs.

Gerald’s wife Jenafor was a city girl, growing up on the West Coast in British Columbia. She travelled to Churchill to work for 3 weeks as an x-ray and ultrasound technologist. She was one of Gerald’s first 13 customers when Gerald first started his company, her life changed forever.... when they were married at the Sled Dog Camp Outfitters tent where Aurora viewing, and sled dog activities take place today. During the past 22 years they have been sharing their unique lives with tourists, in Churchill, Manitoba...the Polar Bear and Beluga Whale Capital of the World. Caring for their remaining Sled Dogs in this unique environment, has tested their resilience as they are exposed to extreme weather conditions, challenges of living in a remote and isolated community including a pandemic.

They would not have lasted were it not for their sled dogs. Bluesky Expeditions sled dogs currently range in age from 9 to 13 years of age. They are all microchipped, tracked and monitored over the course of their life. Programs have evolved over the years as their sled dogs are aging alongside them! Bluesky Expeditions sled dogs are known for being well socialized beyond the harness. Each has a unique place in the pack whether they are pulling a sled or not. Bluesky Sled dogs have worked with thousands of guests, from around the world including schools, seniors, mentally challenged adults and at-risk youth and the Canadian Military alongside Gerald as a Canadian Ranger on exercises in the Churchill area. Bluesky Expeditions has a sled dog adoption program, with placements across Canada and into the US. Thanks for choosing Bluesky Expeditions as part of your itinerary in Churchill...We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our dogs!

    Testimonials

    Aggie (August, 2024)

What an incredible trip to Churchill [with] Marta as our tour guide! Marta organized, coordinated and planned our travel itinerary ensuring that we were able to experience the must-do activities and sights. Our first adventure [involved seeing] beluga whales on a boat tour. We were not disappointed! The breathtaking experience of seeing  Beluga Whales constantly swimming up to the boat throughout the entire two hours was precious. We [were able] to listen to the whale sounds with an under-water microphone!

Later in the evening, we had the opportunity to see incredible Northern Lights shows in the sky. The following day, we [explored] the town of Churchill and [drove out to see] Polar Bears up close in their natural habitat [and their unique behaviour]. She [also] planned relaxing walks along the shoreline of Hudson Bay. Followed by another scenic drive through the arctic landscape to see [even more] Polar Bears. [After all that, we] hopped on the train and [took in] the tundra landscape.

Marta was very knowledgeable, helpful, and a fun guide during our trip to Churchill. She [prioritized] our safety. [Even though] we have seen so much in such a short period of time, we [still] felt very refreshed. With Marta as our tour guide, we were able to see and do things that Churchill is known for: Beluga Whales, northern lights, and Polar Bears, all in one trip!

I highly recommend booking your Churchill trip with Marta!

    Anne (August, 2024)

Living in Manitoba for almost three decades I have never really thought of exploring it [deeper]. [I jumped at] the opportunity to go! It was not a lengthy trip but, WOW! It was packed with quite a few attractions. We took the scenic route by driving from Winnipeg to Thompson and then [took] the overnight train.

Our guide was Marta, and she had everything arranged for us to see and make the most of those few days we were there.

We took a tour [of] Churchill River in a pontoon boat where we were [warmly] welcomed by a large group of Beluga Whales. What a wonderful time we had!

Next, we witnessed Northern Lights that were absolutely majestic with how they were dancing in the sky! Experiencing them in person was unforgettable.

We had a few opportunities to see white Polar Bears in their natural habitat; what a sight to behold!

On top of seeing nature's rugged beauty and being close to whales and bears, Marta took the time to educate us regarding the history of Churchill, local customs and safe ways to experience the wildlife up close and personal. Just walking along the shore of Hudson Bay, [I was] thinking that this was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that you marvel at the beauty [of] in our own backyard, Manitoba.

I would recommend Marta as your tour guide as she has so much passion for Churchill, and it shows!

    Fun Fact!

    Why does Churchill have half-trees?

Also known as, "One-sided trees", the Arctic winds are often too great, and the growing season too short for trees to survive without damage.

Trees are left with this shape because of the strong winds that come off the Hudson Bay (North) side which keeps them from fully growing.
